Your hosts, Parachute, the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit (BCIRPU), and the BC Centre for Disease Control invite you to take part in the Canadian Injury Prevention Conference from November 2 to 4, 2022. This is the first national injury prevention conference held in Canada since 2013!

 

Program Highlights

Conference Welcome

Dr. Bonnie Henry
Provincial Health Officer
, Province of British Columbia

Dr. Bonnie Henry was appointed as Provincial Health Officer for the Province of BC in 2018. Dr. Henry was the deputy provincial health officer for three years. She also served as the interim provincial executive medical director of the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) from December 2013 until August 2014.

She was the medical director of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control and Public Health Emergency Management with the BCCDC and medical director for the provincial emerging and vector-borne diseases program, as well as a provincial program for surveillance and control of healthcare associated infections from 2005 to 2014.

She has worked internationally including with the WHO/UNICEF polio eradication program in Pakistan and with the World Health Organization to control the Ebola outbreak in Uganda.

Dr. Henry is an associate professor at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine. She is the past chair of Immunize Canada and a member of the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization and the National Infection Control Guidelines Steering Committee. She chaired the Canadian Public Health Measures Task Group and was a member of the Infection Control Expert Group and the Canadian Pandemic Coordinating Committee responding to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

André Picard
Health Reporter and Columnist for The Globe and Mail

André has been a staff writer at The Globe and Mail since 1987. He is also the author of six bestselling books. He is an eight-time nominee for the National Newspaper Awards, Canada’s top journalism prize, and past winner of a prestigious Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service Journalism.

André was named Canada’s first “Public Health Hero” by the Canadian Public Health Association, and a “Champion of Mental Health” by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his dedication to improving health care. André is a graduate of the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, and has received honorary doctorates from six universities, including UBC and the University of Toronto.

Closing Keynote

Dr. Frederick Voon
Emergency Medicine Physician and Author

Dr. Voon is a Canadian emergency physician who works in Victoria, BC, and is the author of the book, Your Inside Guide to the Emergency Department, And How to Prevent Having to Go!

After graduating medical school in 2001, Dr. Voon completed residency training in Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. He has worked in clinic and hospital settings, both urban and rural, in British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and New Zealand. Currently, he is an executive of the Victoria Emergency Physicians Association and the hospital Medical Staff Association with special interests in patient education, information technology, mindfulness in medicine, injury prevention and evidence-based happiness.

A Clinical Assistant Professor with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Voon enjoys teaching and personal as well as professional development. He works closely with the Divisions of Family Practice: Transitions in Care with projects including Familiar Faces, which provides digital care plans for the most frequent users of local Emergency Departments.

 

Where is the conference being held? This year’s conference will take place at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel in Vancouver, BC. We intend to hold this conference in person, and we will be closely monitoring public health guidelines.

Who should attend? All who play a role in the injury prevention field including public health, researchers, policy makers, Indigenous peoples, front-line community and social workers, first responders, and those working with priority and under-served populations are welcome to attend.

What topics will the conference cover? Topics will include injuries across the unintentional and inflicted spectrums including traffic, drowning, falls, fire, violence, suicide, and more. In lieu of a full Canadian Fall Prevention Conference, this event will have a focused program stream on fall prevention.

The conference will be held at the Coast Coal Harbour Vancouver Hotel, 1180 West Hastings St.

To get to the hotel from the airport:

  1. Take a 40-minute direct Canada Line SkyTrain from Airport to Waterfront Station
  2. Exit to Granville Street
  3. Take a 10-minute walk headed west on West Hastings Street (turn left on Hastings from Skytrain exit on Granville)

The SkyTrain will cost $9.45 ($4.45 2-Zone Fare + $5 YVR AddFare for Canada Line).

1. Is there a virtual conference option?

This conference will be in person, and there will not be any virtual conference options. Any one of the authors on the abstract are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you in the Fall.

Registration will open at the end of June, please check back for the registration link, or sign up for our newsletter to be notified.

3. Do presenters still need to register?

Yes, presenters still need to register for the conference.

4. How do I cancel my registration?

Up to 30 days before the event: Registrations cancelled before October 2, 2022 will be refunded 100% of registration fees, minus any applicable service fees. Cancellations must be done in Eventbrite.

Between 29 to 7 days before the event: Registrations cancelled between October 3, 2022 and October 26, 2022 will be refunded 50% of registration fees, minus any applicable service fees. All cancellation requests must be made in writing (email to bcinjury@bcchr.ca).

Less than 1 week before the event: No refunds will be issued. To discuss extenuating circumstances, please contact bcinjury@bcchr.ca.
